What are your options without a driveway?
Rank them by cost per kWh and the list orders itself:
- A cross-pavement channel to your own wallbox, if you can reliably park outside your home: home electricity at home prices, and the option that deserves first look now that councils are approving it.
- Workplace charging, if your employer has installed it (the government still funds workplace sockets at up to £500 each[1]).
- Lamppost and on-street AC chargers near home, overnight.
- Destination charging at supermarkets, gyms and car parks while you do something else.
- Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers, the expensive backstop.
Most driveway-free EV owners end up with a blend. The trick is moving as many kWh as possible up this list.
Can you run a cable across the pavement?
This is the option that changes the economics completely, because it puts your car on your own meter. A cross-pavement channel is a shallow slot with a lid, set into the footway, that your Type 2 cable lies inside while charging: no trip hazard, nothing left out overnight.
The government now treats it as mainstream: the chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking pays up to £500 towards a chargepoint plus an approved cross-pavement solution, until 31 March 2027.[1] Councils are catching up at speed. A freedom of information survey published in April 2026 found 7 councils with live cross-pavement schemes, 21 trialling and 28 planning rollout this year: 42% of responding councils expect to offer it by the end of 2026.[2]
What it costs depends, unhelpfully, on where you live. Some councils install channels free, others charge over £1,000; Slough charges £399 including VAT for supply and installation.[3] Add a wallbox (from £949 installed; see what a home charger costs) and you are typically £1,000 to £1,500 all-in, before the £500 grant.
Once installed, you charge like any driveway household: overnight at 8p/kWh on a smart EV tariff,[7] with the whole cheapest-way-to-charge playbook open to you. The catch is parking: the channel only works when you can park by your own kerb, and no council will reserve the space for you.
What do lamppost chargers cost?
Lamppost and bollard chargers are slow AC devices that suit the overnight use case: plug in at 8pm, walk away, unplug in the morning. On ubitricity, the largest UK lamppost network, prices since 1 April 2026 run in three bands: 44p/kWh off-peak (midnight to 7am), 55p standard and 66p at evening peak (4pm to 8pm), with a 54p flat rate where smart pricing is unavailable.[4] Rival operators such as char.gy publish street-level prices in their apps, and overnight rates are consistently the cheap end of on-street charging.

Note what the chart is really saying: the overnight lamppost kWh costs five and a half times the overnight home kWh, and the difference is mostly VAT, infrastructure and margin rather than electricity. Even so, timing matters on-street exactly as it does at home: the same lamppost kWh costs 50% more at teatime than at 2am.[4]
How much more expensive is life without home charging?
Assume 8,000 miles a year at 3.5 miles per kWh, about 2,286kWh, with every kWh bought at one price:

Can you use a three-pin plug from the house?
Over your own path, occasionally and carefully, yes. Across a public pavement, no: a loose cable at ankle height is a trip hazard, councils generally prohibit it, and pairing an extension lead with a 2.3kW trickle charge adds fire risk to slowness. What about workplaces, supermarkets and destinations?
The quiet workhorses of driveway-free ownership. The Workplace Charging Scheme still pays employers up to £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets,[1] so if your workplace has parking and has not installed chargers, the business case is largely pre-paid; forward it to facilities. Supermarket and car park AC chargers turn errands into range, and their pricing (highly variable, sometimes free with a shop) rewards a minute spent in the operator’s app before you rely on one.
A useful weekly pattern for a 150-mile week: one long supermarket AC session, one workplace day, lamppost overnight when parked near one. Many owners find the rapid network becomes what it is for driveway households: a road-trip tool, not a routine.
How do you find chargers you can rely on?
Charger density is now less of a problem than charger knowledge. With 46,731 charging locations live at the end of June 2026,[5] the question is rarely “is there a charger near me” and usually “which of the five nearby is cheap, working and unoccupied at 10pm”. Three habits sort it out:
- Map your quarter-mile. Spend one evening with a charging map app checking every device within a short walk of where you actually park, including the lampposts you have walked past for years without seeing.
- Check prices in the operator’s app, not on the sign. On-street and rapid pricing is increasingly time-banded and app-specific: InstaVolt, for instance, listed 92p/kWh in the daytime but 55p overnight for app users in July 2026 price lists.[8] The same plug, at the same kerb, at almost half price.
- Have a second option. Any single charger will occasionally be occupied or faulted. Driveway-free ownership runs smoothly with a plan B and gratingly without one.
What does a realistic week look like?
Take a 150-mile week, about 43kWh at 3.5 miles per kWh, and price the patterns rather than the anxiety:

Two overnight lamppost sessions cover the week comfortably (assuming a slow 4kW device, that is roughly 28kWh per 7-hour off-peak window), and one supermarket or workplace session pulls the average down further. The spreadsheet answer: without a driveway you are managing a £15 to £30 weekly fuel bill with your habits, where the driveway household has a £3.50 one on autopilot. That gap, about £800 a year at these rates, is the honest cost of the missing kerb, and the cross-pavement channel is why it is worth pestering your council.[2]
Is an EV still worth it without a driveway?
