Assumes every kWh is bought at the selected rate. Ignores standing charges (payable on any tariff), charging losses and DC taper; real rapid sessions usually run 10-80%. Rates checked 18-19 July 2026: Intelligent Octopus Go 8p (Octopus Energy), E.ON Next Drive 9p (E.ON Next), OVO Charge Anytime 14p (OVO), price cap average 26.11p (Ofgem, Jul-Sep 2026), lamppost off-peak 44p (ubitricity), rapid average 79p (Zapmap Price Index, May 2026). Rates change; check the supplier before switching.

How the sums work

Nothing clever: full charge is battery size times the rate. Cost per mile is the rate divided by your efficiency. Annual cost is annual mileage divided by efficiency, times the rate. Charge time is battery size divided by charger power. Real efficiency varies with weather and driving; 3.5 miles per kWh is a reasonable middle for a modern EV, and your car's trip computer will tell you yours.

Where the preloaded rates come from, and how to get the cheap ones, is covered inthe cheapest way to charge an electric car at home. If you have no driveway, the realistic rates are higher: seecharging without a driveway.
