How fast does a three-pin plug charge an electric car?

Every EV sold in the UK can charge from an ordinary domestic socket. The cable that does it, usually called a granny cable, comes in the boot of most new cars. It limits the draw to 2.3kW, which adds roughly 8 miles of range per hour.[1]

The arithmetic is unforgiving. A 60kWh battery divided by 2.3kW is about 26 hours from empty to full. A 7.4kW wallbox, the fastest a standard single-phase UK home supply can run, does the same job in about 8 hours. Most drivers never charge from empty, but even a half-full battery needs the best part of a working day on three pins.

That is why installers themselves describe the three-pin cable as a backup rather than a routine.[2] It is a perfectly good backup. You just need to use it safely and know what it can and cannot do.

Is it safe to charge an EV from a three-pin socket?

Yes, with conditions. A granny cable pulls a heavy load through a domestic socket continuously, for hours at a stretch. That is a harsher duty than almost anything else you plug in, so the socket has to be up to it.

The rules that matter:

  • Plug directly into the socket. No extension leads, no cable reels, no adaptors.
  • Use a sound, professionally fitted socket. Ideally a dedicated one. If the socket is old, loose, or shares a circuit with other heavy loads, have an electrician check it before overnight charging becomes a habit.
  • Check for heat. A warm plug after a long session is a warning sign. Stop charging and get the socket inspected.
  • Never DIY. If anything needs upgrading, that is a job for a qualified electrician, not a weekend project.

What does a three-pin charge cost?

A three-pin charge buys electricity at exactly the same price as your kettle does. Under the Ofgem price cap for 1 July to 30 September 2026, the average direct debit unit rate is 26.11p per kWh,[3] so a full 60kWh charge costs about £15.67, whether it arrives at 2.3kW or 7.4kW.

EV tariffs complicate the picture in an interesting way. Intelligent Octopus Go sells overnight electricity from 8p per kWh in a six-hour window from 23:30 to 05:30.[4] A 7.4kW wallbox can pull about 44kWh in those six hours (7.4 multiplied by 6). A granny cable manages 13.8kWh (2.3 multiplied by 6), call it 14kWh, which at our standard assumption of 3.5 miles per kWh is about 50 miles of range.

That 14kWh costs roughly £1.10 at 8p, against about £3.60 at the cap rate. Cheap either way. The limit is not the price, it is the volume. Fifty miles a night covers a modest commute and little else. If a night’s 50 miles covers your driving, three-pin charging on an EV tariff is genuinely economical. If it does not, the slow rate will leave you short.

When does a granny cable make sense?

Four situations, mainly.

Visiting family. A weekend at a house with no charger is the granny cable’s natural habitat. Two nights plugged in adds a useful chunk of range without anyone installing anything.

Holiday lets. Ask the owner first, plug into a proper outdoor or garage socket, and a week away keeps the car topped up for day trips.

Emergency top-up. When you arrive somewhere nearly flat, 8 miles an hour is slow, but it beats 0 miles an hour.

Low-mileage drivers without a driveway. If you can safely reach a socket you are entitled to use, and a night’s 50 miles more than covers your driving, a granny cable can carry the load for real. Should you fit a wallbox instead?

If you have off-street parking, almost certainly.
