What does a fully installed home charger cost?

The clearest numbers come straight from the manufacturers, because the big brands now sell hardware and installation as one price. Checked on their own sites in July 2026:

Ohme lists the Home Pro “from £999 including standard installation” and the ePod from £949.[1] Pod Point sells the Solo 3S at £999 untethered or £1,049 tethered, installed, or on a subscription at £34 a month for 36 months plus £99 upfront.[2] That subscription totals £1,323 over three years, £324 more than paying £999 for the untethered unit on day one.

Across the wider market, July 2026 comparison guides put the typical fully installed cost at £800 to £1,300 for a 7.4kW unit, with premium and solar-integrated models (the myenergi zappi, quoted individually rather than priced online) towards the top of that band.[3] The tethered-or-untethered decision changes the price by £50 to £100 and the daily experience rather more; we compare them properly in tethered vs untethered EV chargers.

What is included in a standard installation?

A standard job is a surveyed, predictable piece of electrical work: the wallbox mounted on an exterior wall, a cable run back to your consumer unit, a dedicated circuit, earthing protection, connection, testing and the paperwork. Installers survey first (usually from photos of your fuse board and the mounting spot) and Pod Point states that 90% of its customers qualify for standard installation at the advertised price.[2]

Every modern unit sold in Britain is a smart charger by law, and comes preset not to charge during weekday peak hours (08:00 to 11:00 and 16:00 to 22:00) unless you change the schedule, which you are free to do. What can push the price up?

The survey exists to catch the four usual suspects:

  • A long cable run. Charger on the far side of the house from the consumer unit means metres of extra cable, clips and possibly groundwork.
  • Consumer unit work. Old boards without a spare way, or without the right protective devices, need upgrading before a charger can be added.
  • Earthing arrangements. Some homes need additional earthing or protective devices fitted to meet wiring regulations for outdoor equipment.
  • DNO approval. Your installer notifies the distribution network operator; if your supply needs assessment or a fuse upgrade, that can add time and cost.

Comparison guides in July 2026 put these non-standard extras at £200 to £500 on top of the advertised price.[3] Get the survey done properly and the final invoice should not surprise you.

What happens on installation day?

Less than the price suggests. A standard installation is a few hours of one electrician’s day: mount the unit, run and clip the cable, fit the protective devices, connect at the consumer unit, test the circuit and commission the charger with you standing there. You finish with three things in hand: a working app connected to the wallbox, an electrical installation certificate for the new circuit, and confirmation that the DNO paperwork has been submitted. Keep all three with the house documents; the certificate matters when you sell.

The commissioning conversation is worth your attention, because it is where the smart charging defaults get set. Every unit ships preset to avoid weekday peak hours, and the installer will walk you through confirming or changing the schedule. Set your overnight window to match the tariff you intend to use, not the one you are currently on.

Does your charger choice affect your tariff?

Increasingly, yes, and it is the most overlooked £400 in this decision. Scheduled tariffs need something they can control: Intelligent Octopus Go runs through a compatible car or a compatible charger, and Octopus lists supported hardware, including Ohme chargers, on the tariff page.[7] Buy a wallbox that is on your intended tariff’s list and the cheap rate follows automatically; buy an incompatible one with a compatible car and you are still fine; buy neither and the 8p window stays shut regardless of what the hardware cost. Can a grant cut the cost?

For most homeowners with a driveway, no. The original homeowner scheme closed in 2022. What remains, until 31 March 2027, is targeted: the EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost up to £500 for flat owner-occupiers and for renters with private off-street parking, and a parallel grant of up to £500 covers households with only on-street parking installing a cross-pavement solution.[4] Landlords can claim up to £500 per socket across as many as 200 sockets.

The application is made by an OZEV-approved installer on your behalf, and since April 2026 you must not install until the application is confirmed. Do you need planning permission?

Almost never. Wall-mounted home chargepoints are permitted development in England provided the unit stays under 0.2 cubic metres and the property is not listed, with extra caution needed in conservation areas. Since May 2025 a wall unit may face the highway.[5] The real obligations are electrical, not planning: the work falls under building regulations, which is one more reason it is done by a qualified installer rather than at the weekend. How quickly does a charger pay for itself?

Compare the £999 wallbox with the alternatives it replaces. Assume 8,000 miles a year at 3.5 miles per kWh, about 2,286kWh, and July 2026 rates.

Against a life spent at public rapids (the Zapmap average was 79p/kWh in May 2026[8]), the charger repays itself in well under a year. Against lazy home charging at the cap’s 26.11p,[6] the payback is about two and a half years, because the wallbox plus a smart EV tariff at 8p/kWh[7] is what unlocks the cheap window. After payback it is pure saving for a decade of ownership.

How do you choose an installer?

Three tests sort the field quickly. First, if you have any grant eligibility, the installer must be OZEV-approved or there is no grant.[4] Second, they should survey before quoting and put the standard-installation boundary in writing. Third, they handle the DNO notification and hand over electrical certification when they leave. Manufacturer networks (Ohme, Pod Point and others sell installation with the unit) and independent local electricians both pass these tests; get two quotes and make them itemise anything beyond standard.

A useful comparison discipline: ask each quote to state, separately, the hardware price, the standard installation boundary, the cost per metre of extra cable, and who pays if the DNO requires supply work. Quotes that itemise those four lines can be compared; quotes that arrive as one round number cannot, and round numbers are where surprises live.
